About

Bhawana’s key contributions are mainly focused on development of Noble metal nanoparticles based Pickering Interfacial Catalyst (PIC) for oxidation of organosilanes. The use of Pickering interfacial catalyst (PIC) formed by amphiphilic and catalytically active colloidal particles as emulsifying agents has been widely studied in the literature. This method significantly enhances the contact region and consequently the collision frequency of reagents from two different phases and allows easy separation of the products and recyclability of the catalyst. Nevertheless, the application of PIC in synthetic organosilicon chemistry had not been explored until a recent report from Bhawana’s work. Bhawana has proposed that Au or Pd nanoparticles tethered on an amphiphilic block copolymer act as a Pickering emulsifier to stabilize a dispersion of water in chloroform.1-3 The efficacy of the catalytic system for hydrolytic oxidation of primary organosilanes, RSiH3 has been established by the isolation of linear poly(hydrosiloxane)s. The catalysts have been found to be highly selective, active and recyclable. More so, post chemical modification of the Si–H groups in these siloxane polymers may offer interesting possibilities to develop new polysiloxane based materials.
In addition to this Bhawana and group has reported a detailed study on catalytic hydrogenation of nitro aromatics using Ru nanoparticles intercalated Montmorillonite Clay catalytic system. The catalyst was found to be recycled up to 8 times. Various amines were also synthesized using the proposed methodology, having direct importance as building blocks of several biologically active compounds.
