About
Dr. Shailendra Kumar is a researcher in the field of advanced functional materials, energy harvesting technologies, and self-powered sensing systems. He is currently serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar after completing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi under the supervision of Prof. Ankur Goswami. His doctoral research focused on investigating triboelectric effects in polymer dielectrics and inorganic semiconductors through engineered interfaces for sustainable energy harvesting applications.
His research interests span triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs), self-powered sensors, tactile and human–machine interaction sensing, thin-film deposition, electrospinning, and multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. Dr. Kumar has extensive expertise in designing and developing experimental setups for triboelectric measurements, including a patented cost-effective instrument for studying the synergistic effects of contact electrification and photovoltaic phenomena. His work also integrates experimental materials research with finite element simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics and related computational tools.
Dr. Kumar has worked extensively with advanced materials such as PDMS, PVDF, PAN, cellulose nanocrystals, MAX phase materials, MWCNTs, semiconductor interfaces, and flexible polymer systems for wearable and IoT-based applications. His research has contributed to the development of high-performance energy harvesting systems, tribo-photovoltaic devices, electrospun nanofiber sensors, and sustainable bio-inspired electronic materials.
He has authored several research articles in leading journals, including Royal Society of Chemistry journals, American Chemical Society journals, and other internationally recognized publications in materials science and nanotechnology. His scientific contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors including the Young Researcher Award at the E-MRS Fall Meeting 2024 and the Research Excellence Travel Award from IIT Delhi.
Beyond research publications, Dr. Kumar has actively contributed to establishing advanced laboratory infrastructure, including thin-film deposition and triboelectric characterization facilities. He possesses hands-on expertise in nanofabrication, cleanroom processing, sputtering, e-beam evaporation, microscopy techniques, and instrumentation development. He is also an active member of the Tribology Society of India.
His long-term research vision focuses on developing sustainable, flexible, and intelligent self-powered systems for next-generation wearable electronics, energy harvesting, smart sensing, and human-centered technologies.
