About
Abhisek Ghosal, PhD, Molecular Diagnostics Assay Development Scientist.
Dr. Abhisek Ghosal is a molecular diagnostics scientist with almost two decades of experience in the molecular techniques, development and validation of clinical assays for oncology applications. He currently serves as a Product Development Scientist at MDxHealth, where his work centers on PCR- and next-generation sequencing–based diagnostics, analytical validation, and quality-driven assay development in regulated laboratory environments. He has upgraded his research application to next level by mastering machine learning and AI in diagnosis with solid understanding in statistics and scripting.
He earned his PhD in the area of Biochemistry and Molecular Microbiology from Jadavpur University, India and completed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Irvine. His professional experience spans in translational assay development across industry and academic settings.
He has authored few dozens of peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at numerous International scientific conferences. He was awarded for Young Scientist award, Editorial Picks and travel awards for presenting research papers. He had been member of different scientific community as American Physiology Society, USA (APS), American Society for Microbiology, USA (ASM), American Gastroenterological Society, USA (AGA). He has been reviewer for Elsevier journals for almost 10 years. He has served as reviewer for almost hundred peer-reviewed publications across different publishing houses and journals.
His research work can be broadly categorized as follows.
1) Infectious Disease Research: His early research focused on host–pathogen interactions in enteric infections, particularly Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella. His work combined molecular biology, protein characterization, and cellular models to understand bacterial colonization factors, intestinal adherence, and pathogen-induced disruption of host transport processes. These studies contributed to a clearer understanding of how microbial virulence mechanisms intersect with intestinal physiology and mucosal integrity.
2) Vitamin Transport & Intestinal Biology: A significant portion of his academic work examined the regulation and function of intestinal vitamin transporters, including biotin, riboflavin, pantothenate, and multivitamin transport systems. Using cellular models, knockout mouse systems, and molecular characterization approaches, his studies clarified transporter structure–function relationships and adaptive regulatory mechanisms under physiological and disease conditions. Several of these works were recognized as Editor’s Picks, reflecting their impact on the field of gastrointestinal and cellular physiology.
3) Oncology Diagnostics & Molecular Pathology: In recent years, Dr. Ghosal’s research has centered on molecular diagnostics for oncology, with an emphasis on analytical validation and real-world performance of NGS-based and methylation-based assays. His publications include multi-center evaluations of circulating tumor DNA sequencing platforms, cross-panel analytical benchmarking, and validation of DNA methylation biomarkers for early detection of Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. This body of work highlights a consistent focus on assay robustness, clinical relevance, and reproducibility in regulated diagnostic settings.
Few of his works were published in American Journal of Physiology, JBC, Nature, Genome Biology, BBA, Plos One, Diagnostics, Microbiology, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and BMC Cancer.
