About
Shirish Chandrakar is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. His doctoral research focuses on hydrogen–microstructure interactions in titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloys, with particular emphasis on how crystallographic texture, grain boundaries, temperature, and strain rate govern hydrogen-assisted deformation and fracture mechanisms.
He has expertise in advanced characterization techniques including synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction (DESY), electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI), and in-situ SEM-EBSD, as well as computational approaches such as crystal plasticity simulations (DAMASK), CALPHAD, and machine learning. His research integrates experimental and computational methods to uncover fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement and to inform the design of hydrogen-compatible structural materials.
As part of his Direct Ph.D. program, Shirish was also awarded an M.Tech degree, where his thesis combined crystal plasticity simulations with machine learning to study microstructural evolution in copper during strain path changes. He obtained his B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Raipur.
His broader research interests include hydrogen embrittlement, additive manufacturing, deformation mechanisms, and sustainable materials science.
