About
Vivek Kumar Nair is an environmental biotechnologist and Research Associate at the Centre for Rural Development and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He received his PhD in Environmental Biotechnology from the School of Interdisciplinary Research, IIT Delhi, in 2025. His doctoral work developed oxygenic photogranules for tertiary treatment of textile wastewater and recovered phycocyanin from the residual biomass for use as a natural textile dye.
His research focuses on algal–bacterial systems for wastewater treatment and resource recovery. He has designed and run photobioreactors over long campaigns, studied how photoperiod and aeration affect granule stability and pollutant removal, and evaluated treated effluent with multi-organism toxicity bioassays. His wider interests include pigment and biomass valorisation, carbon capture using algae, microplastics and emerging contaminants, and life cycle and techno-economic assessment of treatment processes.
His work has appeared in journals including ACS ES&T Water, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Science of the Total Environment, Cleaner Materials and Environmental Research. During his PhD he completed a funded research stay at the University of Eastern Finland under the TFK programme. He holds an MSc and a BSc (Hons) in Botany from Banaras Hindu University.
